The Waipa Foundation hosted its two-day Waipa Kalo Festival earlier this month. The event — themed E Ola Na Iwi Ia Kakou or “to honor the traditions of our ancestors” — attracted more than 700 visitors the first day alone. Activities included recognition of kupuna kalo farmers, hands-on workshops, a loi tour, a competition for the biggest kalo, a kalo art contest display, educational displays, craft vendors, keiki activities and games, and live entertainment by The Kamaainas, Walt Keale and emcee Bu Laia. Proceeds benefit the Waipa Community Kitchen and Poi Mill.
