Tell us about your business. I own and operate Internal Healing Center, which offers colon hydrotherapy, also known as colonics. I also have a 3-foot-tall assistant: my daughter, Remedy Running Horse. She’s 2-and-a-half. Colon hydrotherapy is a cleansing treatment for your intestine that flushes out toxins and impurities for a healthier you.
How did you get started in this business and how long has it been going? When I discovered colonics in my 20s, it changed my life. I spent a year in school and became certified by Dr. Mark Baker in 2000. Within a year I made my debut in San Diego, where I opened Internal Cleansing Center, which I sold in 2005 because I had a longtime desire to move to Hawaii and raise a child.
Where are you from originally, and what role does that play in your business (if any)? I’m originally from St. Louis. My deep desire to be in service to people began when I was in grade school as a “candy striper” volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital. This was a very powerful, fulfilling experience. Also, growing up with my family owning a restaurant, I learned the respect of working hard to earn a dollar … and to do it with a smile on my face. I also got my certification training in colonics and massage therapy while in school in Missouri.
What is your specialty, and who can benefit from it? My specialty is knowing every poop joke on earth! OK, all kidding aside, my specialty is holistic healing. Anyone can benefit. Colonics are very useful for adults who value feeling good on an everyday basis.
For those who may not understand what you do, in lay terms, why is it essential? I view the body as similar to having a car. Most car owners know that to keep a car engine “healthy” they have to change the oil every 5,000 miles. If they do not, the car first begins to have an excess of emissions coming out of the tailpipe, then loses horsepower, and before you know it, the engine breaks down and has to be replaced. Our bodies are very similar except we can’t just go out and get a new body. So a once-a-month maintenance colonic is very important. People will go through a cleaning-out phase of several series of colonics before entering maintenance mode.
What sets your business apart? Location, location, location. To my knowledge I am the only business on Kaua’i offering colonics with FDA-approved Open Colonic systems.
Why do you do what you do? This treatment has changed my life forever. I was battling severe, chronic constipation. For years I turned to medical doctors for relief, with zero results. The first time I saw a colonic was when I was doing patient care in a cancer hospital in Mexico. After suffering for so long I was ready to do anything to get relief. I was fortunate that Dr. Mark Baker, my doctor in Missouri for many years, was offering the treatment. I never knew I could feel that great, and devoted myself to helping others get the same relief.
What motivates you to get up and go to work every day? I’m a healing junkie. I thrive on helping people to take back their power. I love seeing the smiles of people who have realized that colonics are a powerful solution for a healthy shift in their lives. The stories of people fitting into those jeans that they haven’t fit into in years, or having more patience with their loved ones, or chronic debilitating symptoms disappearing keeps me motivated.
Do you have a business motto or philosophy for doing business? If you build it they will come. This is referral-based business. I offer rewards to those who refer people here.
What is the most challenging aspect of your business? Getting people to adopt a new technology.
What is your business plan for the future? The future’s so bright you gotta wear shades. Now that the negative effects of our modern diet and limitations of western medicine are becoming better known, more and more people are waking up determined to undo the damage of a lifetime of eating a toxic diet. Colonics are the No. 1 way to effectively accomplish that. I’m seeing a drastic increase in business recently. People want to have their health back so they can live their lives with their families. They want to leave a healthy legacy that will affect many generations to come long after they have passed. They don’t want their story to be, “oh, everyone in our family dies early because we eat junk stuff.”
If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? My life’s mission would be to make everyone in the world laugh … it’s the joy in life that makes it juicy.
