Personal Training For All
By Jane Riley
Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Nutrition Coach
Tell us about your business. The business name is Jane Riley Fitness and Nutrition, and I have been doing what I’m doing for about 30 or so years. No employees, just me, and what I do is succeed with my clients because I work individually with them and their wants, needs, goals and lifestyle. Too often trainers slap people on basically the same-old, sameold: a get-fit program, a weight-loss program or a get-big program that isn’t individualized. Therefore, it is not optimal. I work with each person’s unique set of circumstances That’s why people are successful.
How did you get started in this business? I got started training people because I was a successful competitive athlete and people saw how I trained and how I looked, and they wanted that for themselves. I got certified as a personal fitness trainer and finished my degree in kinesiology, and the rest as they say is history. Since then, I added certifications in Pilates, yoga, nutrition, senior group exercise and just about anything else related to wellness and fitness. I’ve just arrived on the island, and am very much looking forward to meeting and helping people here.
Where are you from and what role does that play in your business, if any? I was born and raised in Canada, so to get certified initially I had to come to the United States because way back in those days Canada didn’t have certification entities. I am certified in both countries and have lived throughout North America, always training people and loving it.
What is your specialty? I believe that I have likely worked with just about every situation in fitness you could imagine: I work with children, seniors, overweight people, athletes, people who have suffered injuries, severe injuries, people with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease and so on. Experience with diverse people and situations has allowed me to understand and help my clients.
What sets your business apart? I work with my client’s lifestyle in mind, and we start with a comprehensive fitness evaluation and lifestyle questionnaire, we begin from the same basis of understanding. That is pivotal.
Why do you do what you do? I was born for this! I love people and I love helping them achieve their goals.
What motivates you to get up and go to work every day? My clients.
Do you have a business motto or philosophy for doing business? That anyone who is influenced by me comes away a better person.
What is the most challenging aspect of your business? I have no real challenges, it is a positive atmosphere.
What is your business plan for the future? I wish to positively impact as many people on Kaua’i as need my services, and to lead by example that fitness and good nutrition can lead to a lifetime of health and well-being.
If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? Can’t imagine.
Where are you located, what are your hours and contact information and do you have a website?
I live in Kapa’a, but I travel to the client’s location. I bring all that we need with me, so they don’t need equipment or any of that. All they need to supply is the desire to succeed. My phone is 212-1451. My website is janerileyfitness.com.
How are you so successful with helping people get in shape? I learned very early on in my career that the reason most people fail at achieving the results they want is not because they are not committed. It is because they have been set up to fail. Unless their trainer has taken the time to understand their lifestyle as well as their goals and their level of fitness, they are doomed to fail. This is why the training programs that you get in magazines or on videos don’t work. They are not set up for your goals, your needs and certainly not with your lifestyle in mind.
