Changes, Check For Humane Society

Julie Werner joined Kauai Humane Society staff last month as volunteer coordinator. Werner, a volunteer for the nonprofit for more than two years, has been involved in activities such as Critter Camp and the development and implementation of the pet food bank. The volunteer and humane education departments at KHS have been combined into one unit called Community Services. Jonny Fisher, KHS’s humane educator, is the new community services manager and has had many years of experience in animal welfare, including serving three years at Oregon Humane Society. In other news, the nonprofit recently received a $5,000 donation from Subaru Hawaii, following the auto company’s “Share the Love” sales event …

Women in Theatre currently is accepting submissions for its 2015 “Kauai Shorts” — its fifth biennial 10-minute play festival.

Playwrights can pen something about any subject suitable for a general audience. Previous or professionally produced plays are ineligible. The cast should consist of no more than six actors and the set is to be kept simple. About 20 plays will be chosen for production, with special consideration given to Hawaii-based playwrights. Entries are due by March 23. There is no application fee for kamaaina. Authors will be notified of decisions by June 1, and the festival is slated for Aug. 7 and 9 at Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. Visit WomenInTheatre.org for entry forms …

Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital held its 10th annual Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament in November at Poipu Bay Golf Course. Jeremy Valck had a hole-in-one in the tournament and received a set of golf clubs from Nike.

The tourney, which drew the most golfers to date, raised some $9,000, and the hospital recently was able to purchase a bariatric hospital bed for its ICU, and is in the process of purchasing privacy doors for the unit as well. A free series of “Bicycle Skills for Adults” classes is offered by Kauai Path. The first class is Saturday (Feb. 21) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kauai District Health Office in Lihue. The same class will be offered again in Lihue and twice in Kapaa.
