A Good Reason To Leash Your Dogs

More Kauai wildlife has suffered at the hands of irresponsible dog owners. Leash-less pooches recently killed a baby monk seal while injuring its mother trying to protect her offspring. When we look at the cold, hard facts of this matter, it points to a life that was needlessly lost and a beautiful motherly instinct to which anyone with a sense of compassion can connect. It’s frustrating that no matter how many times those of us who love our endangered creatures kindly recommend that everyone abide by the leash law (remember all the albatross and shearwaters slaughtered by dogs in recent months?), they still seem to be words lost in the ether …

On Saturday (Aug. 16), Sheraton Kauai Resort presents its second annual RumFest at RumFire Poipu Beach in celebration of National Rum Day. Women In Theatre is looking for a new venue to present its intimate productions. Renovations are slated for its former location, Coconut Marketplace, and the eclectic theatrical organization must find another home. For a decade, the group has provided entertainment to the island in various forms, including Japanese classic theatre, 10-minute plays and scenes from Tennessee Williams’ productions. WIT currently is working on a play by local author David Penhallow Scott called Emma’s Last Dance, which celebrates Kauai’s heritage and will be performed Sept. 26, 27 and 28 at Kauai Community College‘s Performing Arts Center. The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park are looking for volunteers to assist with Snorkel for a Cause Saturday (Aug. 16) from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Morgan’s Ponds at Lydgate Beach Park.
