Adopting a pet from Kauai Humane Society is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. There is nothing quite like giving an orphaned animal a new home and an opportunity for a new beginning. Celebrate your love for the ocean Friday (Feb. 14). Kauai Surfrider is having a fundraiser called “For Love of the Ocean” from 7 to 11 p.m. at Tahiti Nui. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Puhi last month for Hokulei Village, which will house Safeway as well as other businesses, including Petco and Jack in the Box. The 56,000-square-foot Safeway Lifestyle store will be the anchor tenant of the more than 14-acre complex. Ground infrastructure installation is currently under way, and vertical work is slated to begin in the summer. Safeway is scheduled to open in November, while other tenants will follow soon after. I don’t know about you, but as a resident of Lihue, I’m a little excited to have a new option for grocery shopping in the area, especially since the lifestyle store will have an expanded selection of organic foods …

Women Artists of Kauai presents a Fine Art Festival Sunday (Feb. 16) from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at National Tropical Botanical Garden’s South Shore Visitor Center. Original art and prints will be on sale, with a portion of the proceeds supporting NTBG. Featured artists are Anna Skaradzinska, Suzy Staulz, Donia Lilly, Jennifer Rutt, Marionette Taboniar, Lannie Boesiger, Caylin Spear, Helen Turner, Patrice Pendarvis and Keani Andrade. Another artist, Santiago Soto, will show off his talent Saturday (Feb. 15) at his new art gallery in Princeville Center. Wailua Golf Course has a new snack bar called Over Par, which opened its doors last month. The new business is open daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers breakfast, lunch and packaged snacks and beverages. Other upgrades at the county’s golf course include scoreboard replacement and a new driving range net. A restaurant and bar is expected to open soon as well …
