Kaua‘i Teachers Honored As Pioneers

For their roles as pioneer educators, five retired teachers from Kaua’i flew to Honolulu to be acknowledged by the Hawaii chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an organization that promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. The five – Jo Duvauchelle, Bertha Kawakami, Maryanne Kusaka, Joanne Nakashima and Carol Yotsuda – are to be included in an exclusive publication, Makers of Destiny Hawaiian Style,

KCC and the YWCA are raising awareness about domestic violence. One activity they’re using to get the word out is the Clothesline project. Students decorate T-shirts with messages to end domestic violence – Monday and Wednesday, Oct 25 and 27, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The shirts be displayed on campus for the rest of the week. Shirt decorating will be in the library and upstairs in the student union where they’ll be displayed, and more spots may be selected for the “clothesline” as well. Anyone is welcome to join in.

What’s up next: The Lihue support group is re-introducing Caregiver Cafés. Join other family care-givers the third Thursday of each month at noon. Bring a dish to share and meet in the Elderly Affairs meeting room in the Moikeha Building (former Gem Store). The Kapaa support group meets Mondays at noon in the Kapaa Neighborhood Center front room. It’s also Caregiver Café-style with potluck. Halau Na Pua O Ke Kukui will perform at the Kaua‘i Christian Academy Fall Festival

Rain or shine, gallop on over to the 10th Annual Kaua’i Christian Academy Fall Festival on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31, between 4 and 9 p.m. The academy hopes to raise $20,000 to build a new playground structure. Organizers say this gig has awesome activities such as bounce houses, smash car, game booths, keiki carnival rides, balloon darts, football toss, fish pond, petting zoo, dunking booth, air-soft target range, hayrides and more. The food lineup includes funnel cakes, Cold Stone ice cream and home-baked goods, as well as booths serving dinner.
