Taking A Walk For Alzheimer’s

Memory Walk ambassador Chip Webb

Walking is one of the greatest exercises ever and it’s an opportunity waiting for your feet. You can raise money walking for different causes. Next up is Oct. 9 at 8 a.m. Get on over to Kukui Grove Center that day and walk on behalf of Alzheimer’s disease patients. The Alzheimer’s Association 2010 Memory Walk needs you to help the 1,500 or so people on the island who suffer with Alzheimer’s disease. Every $100 donated helps Kaua’i family caregivers with training, research and support groups. Get the details by calling 245-3200 or online at memorywalk2010.kintera.org/kauai

Grace Guslander, owner and manager of the iconic Coco Palms Resort, would be 100 this year, had she lived. In honor of the centennial of her birth, Kaua’i Historical Society is paying homage to her by having a gathering at Smith’s Tropical Paradise, an equally venerable treasure trove of nooks and crannies. Basics: Saturday, Oct. 23, 5 p.m., loads of entertainment with featured artist Kainani Kahaunaele but, of course, it can’t happen without octogenarian Larry Rivera, possibly more iconic than the Coco Palms itself. Call Kauai Historical Society at (808) 245-3373 or e-mail info@kauaihistoricalsociety.org for reservations. Tickets cost $65 and are available at local outlets. …
