If you’re still looking to create some tasty grinds after ringing in the new year, consider participating in the Kauai Coffee Koloa Rum Challenge. The two companies are teaming up for a good cause. The proceeds of the culinary challenge will benefit Kauai Community College‘s Culinary Institute of the Pacific and Kauai Habitat for Humanity. Participants in the challenge must use Kauai Coffee and/or Koloa Rum ingredients in their recipes. The creations will be judged at three separate events between January and March 2014 in the categories of entrée, drink or dessert. Bank of Hawaii employees achieved an 85 percent participation rate through their contributions to Kauai United Way‘s 2013 Annual Campaign. The gift has allowed the nonprofit to reach the 70 percent mark of its campaign goal, according to Scott Giarman, KUW executive director. The campaign runs through March 2014. St. Theresa Catholic School recently installed a 15-kilowatt photovoltaic system on its rooftop, thanks to a grant received through the Kekaha Host Community Benefits program. The system is expected to generate approximately 75 percent of the school’s energy. What makes the $55,000 grant so unique is its condition that the same amount be distributed to students from Kekaha as scholarships, as soon as $55,000 is collected by the school through energy savings …

Kauai Community Players recently announced the opening of its 2014 season with the play Closer. The show is directed by Faith Harding and will be performed at Puhi Theatrical Warehouse.
