Things That Go Bump On Our Roads
Grrrrr — that’s the polite version of what I say to myself as I dodge potholes on my way to various activities across the island.
I don’t mind a few bumps and bruises on the roadways every now and again, but these are the same obstacles I’ve been avoiding for several years. I know there are elements involved that are beyond my scope of comprehension as to why certain roads are neglected for so long.
But I start to question the process as the situation gets dangerous with cars straddling the shoulder or drifting toward the center line to avoid potential mine pits (as well as mine pits that have been covered over and over and over again). I’m sure I’m not the only one baffled by the selection of roads that are expanded/improved upon — Ahukini Road, anyone? — while others remain in dire need of being fixed or widened (too many to name) …

Apparently a world record was set June 1 at Taste of Hawaii. Thanks to Kimo Rosen for letting us know that Kauai Grill general manager Antonio Palomares set a record by sabering 31 champagne bottles in 45 seconds. Sabering is the act of opening a champagne bottle with a saber or knife. It’s something they do for visitors every day at sunset outside on the balcony at St. Regis Princeville Resort, which I’ve seen firsthand. This is definitely one of those “don’t try this it at home” kind of things — no matter how much bubbly liquid courage you might have …
