There’s something about the South Shore that I find endearing. Maybe it’s that I can be driving in a downpour heading toward Koloa one moment, and approximately 10 minutes later, be greeted by Poipu’s bright-blue skies. But even though the days are almost always sunny Southside, that doesn’t mean the cactus-strewn neighborhood is immune to severe weather. Even the most sun-drenched parts of the island have to be prepared for hurricane season, and it’s best to have the necessary tools on hand in case of emergency. To help the community get ready for the season, a Kauai Emergency Preparedness Workshop is offered Saturday (June 14) from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lihue Neighborhood Center. Contact Mark Marshall of Kauai Civil Defense at 241-1800 or mmarshall@kauai.gov for more information …

Treat your father to a special day in a tropical setting Sunday (June 15) at National Tropical Botanical Garden‘s Southshore Visitors Center. Enjoy the scenery along with original paintings created by Women Artists of Kauai, including Jennifer Rutt, Caylin Spear and Suzy Staulz, which will be on display and available for purchase from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. …

Maybe enjoying a reggae performance with Dad is more up your (or his!) alley. Also Sunday, Matisyahu and Steel Pulse will take the stage at Kilohana Plantation. Presented by BAMP Project, doors open for the concert at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 5:15. Tickets cost $39 and can be purchased at Déjà Vu Surf Hawaii in Lihue, Rainbow Gas and Mini Mart in Kapaa, Pono Market, Healthy Hut, Kmart, Progressive Expressions and flavorus.com. For more information on the artists, visit akeda.matisyahuworld.com or steelpulse.com
