‘Iolani, Waimea Win Tourney
Waimea took advantage of a new category in the softball tournament it hosts annually, turning the format change into championship hardware.
‘Iolani claimed the Division I title with a 5-1 victory over Punahou while Waimea eked out a 3-2 win over Kalani in the Division II championship game of the Waimea High School Invitational Softball Tournament Feb. 26 at Hanapepe Stadium.
The tournament featured 14 teams, including three squads from Kaua’i. The three-day tournament was formerly held during the week of Thanksgiving, but was moved when the softball schedule became part of the spring athletics season. The Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation starts regular season play March 9 when Kaua’i travels to face Kapa’a.
