Girls Just Want To Roller Derby

Following a trend that is sweeping the U.S., women young and old on Kaua’i are strapping on skates, taking on creative names and throwing elbows. Yes, it’s roller derby.

They were at it March 26 at Kaua’i Inline Hockey Association rink in Kapa’a, with the Shamrocks edging the Rainbows 82-79 with a bold move as time expired.

It was a fundraiser to help send five members of the Garden Island Renegade Rollerz – The Warden, Tamminator, Calamity Crush, Kaizer PermaMento and Suki-2U – to an all-star event in Arizona.

For women interested in joining, the nonprofit club offers free clinics Saturdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at Kalena Park in Lihu’e.
