Kaua’i Museum Fundraiser
A Sept. 17 fundraiser at Kaua’i Museum featured master navigator and executive director of the Polynesian Voyaging Society Nainoa Thompson. Thompson was an honorary presenter for the current exhibit at the museum, Pulama Ia Na Koa O Kai, The Story Of Hokule’a, and spoke about the canoe’s origin, future plans to sail around the world and the importance of recruiting and training the next generation of voyagers. Hokule’a is the double-hulled canoe that helped launch a renaissance in Hawaiian culture in 1978 by sailing to Tahiti using traditional wayfinding skills without modern navigation tools.
