Red Raiders Rope Mustangs

By MidWeek Kaua’i Staff

Kaua’i High was movin’ on up in the state high school football playoffs after an exciting 17-14 quarterfinal win over Oahu’s Kalaheo High at Vidinha Stadium.

The Mustangs from Kailua jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, putting together a 16-play, 71-yard drive on the game’s first possession. Fifty-one of those yards came on pass plays.

But sparked by senior Darren Acoba, who rushed for 153 yards on 14 carries, including touchdown runs of 30 and 29 yards in the second half, KHS came back to secure the win. Acoba also had two catches for 25 yards. Not a bad afternoon.

But credit the offensive line, which opened big holes all day and gave quarterback Shea Shimabukuro time to throw.

The Red Raiders were to play top-ranked Iolani on Oahu this past Saturday.
