Ridin’, Ropin’and Racin’
They were ridin’ and ropin’ and racin’ at CJM Stables in Poipu when the Kaua’i Keiki and High School Rodeo Association (KKHSRA) sponsored a junior rodeo on Jan. 8. Kim Medeiros of the KKHSRA says 46 youths participated, ranging in age from 5 to 18.
“Twenty-four of our members are in the keiki division, from grade 3 down to age 5,” she says. “We have 10 in junior high and 11 in high school.”
Junior high cowboys and cowgirls are prepping for states on Oahu in May, while high schoolers are looking ahead to states at Parker Ranch on the Big Island in June.
As these photos attest, the Garden Isle’s paniolo tradition is alive and well in the reins of a younger generation.
