State Champions At Last!

The third time really was the charm for the Kapaa High boys soccer team. Having reached the state D-II championship the two previous years, only to lose to Honokaa of the Big Island, the Warriors defeated Mid-Pacific of Oahu, 2-1, to win the HHSAA championship at Waipio Soccer Park on Feb. 9.

Kapaa put the pressure on the younger Owls from the start, and outshot them 17-9. Tanner Henry scored the first goal for Kapaa in the eighth minute. Mid-Pac scored the equalizer in the ninth minute, and then in the 21st Michael Alonzo scored the winning goal on a low drive. The Warriors held on from there to claim the title.

Making the all-tournament team were Alonzo, his brother Daniel Alonzo, Joshua Cram and Henry.
