The Cowboys Ride Again
One of the Garden Island’s favorite sports traditions – the Kaua’i Cowboys, founded in 1993 by Willie Kaua’i – returned to the gridiron recently (after a seven-year hiatus) against a team from Oahu at Kapa’a Stadium.
Once again, Al Ah Loo is the head coach. “Actually,” he said, “this game was more like the Old Cowboys versus the New Cowboys.” The old boys won, 14-12, when a two-point conversion late in the game failed.
“Our uniforms didn’t arrive, so I have to thank Brad Hironaka of Kaua’i Youth Football, who loaned us their uniforms,” the coach said.
Coach Ah Loo, whose offensive coordinator is his brother Marshall, says the team practices twice a week, and has plans to play a home-and-home series with a Houston team.
