  King Ronzilla
Iwas really excited when I heard the movie Godzilla vs. Kong was coming out. It’s typically not my kind of movie — though I do enjoy a range of movies from Jojo Rabbit to My Octopus Teacher to John Wick — I’m not a big fan of the extensive use of CGI. While the first Jurassic Park movie was great, I soon grew tired of CGI taking over movies like Fast & Furious, The Avengers and recently, Justice League.
I’m probably alone in the dislike of rampant CGI, but I prefer a great story and real acting performances. However, I have to give Godzilla vs. Kong a pass. That’s because I have history with King Kong and Godzilla.
I remember my mom and dad taking my sister, brother and me to see the first partnering of these two titans in King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962. Later, in 1967 in Okinawa, we went to see King Kong Escapes, which featured a robot Kong called Mechani-Kong.
Years later, I wanted to take my young family to see a drive-in movie. We went to Kam Drive-in to see Godzilla with Mathew Broderick. I drove a pickup truck back then, so after I parked it in reverse, we jumped in the truck bed with beach chairs and blankets.
Our daughter was still an infant, so we kept her next to us in her car cradle. My wife had made fried chicken and musubi bentos, while my son and I went to get the must- have drive-in staple: buttered popcorn.
I was so glad we did that as not too long after, drive-in theaters started to close. Still, it was a great memory as we were happy and having fun as a family, and it didn’t break the bank. And if you’re going to see a drive-in movie, it might as well be a damn monster movie!
But my, have things changed. While Godzilla vs. Kong is playing in movie theaters (yay!), I decided to download it from a streaming service. My daughter had already seen it with her boyfriend, so she and my wife opted to watch American Idol in another room to cheer on Wahiawā girl Liahona Olayan.
Ready for some Kong/Godzilla WWE, I fired up a bag of movie theater buttered microwave popcorn, poured myself a Diet Pepsi and had a Butterfinger candy bar ready to go.
I won’t spoil the movie for those who plan to see it, but I was not disappointed. It still had a cheesy storyline, and for the life of me, I don’t know when the military will learn that conventional weapons don’t phase these monsters.
Oh, and I didn’t tear up at any point in the movie in spite of the little girl.
