        CHASING THE LIGHT
with the Rev. Blayne Higa
“To come out of darkness we must open our eyes to the light.”
   — The Rev. Dr. Seigen Yamaoka
When we began this year, I don’t think anyone imagined how challenging and life-changing things would become. The ongo- ing pandemic, along with the civil and political un- rest we are facing as a na- tion, has certainly tested our resilience. This darkness in the world often seems over- whelming, and we have been desperately searching for some glimmer of hope.
ll of us have things to do that we tend to put off. Whether difficult or boring, these “must dos” act like the pebble in your shoe that

keeps reminding you of its presence.
The longer we put these tasks off, the guiltier we
feel. Over time, our thoughts grow in mass and si- phon away our energy.
Whatever your “pebble” is, schedule it at the be- ginning of the day. You’ll never do it at the end of the day (as you know), so by doing it first, it will not only make the rest of the day feel lighter, but it will also allow the flow of your day to move toward things you enjoy more — without that drag.
There have been many days where I simply could not see the light despite the sun shining all around me. The daily struggle of putting one foot in front of the other trying to manage the chaos of life has narrowed my vi- sion and dimmed my per- ception. However, there are moments of human kindness that pierce through the dark- ness, revealing the light that is ever-present in our world.
Simple acts of kindness, like leaving fresh fruit for a neighbor, can bring light into that person’s life.

A few months ago, after a particularly rough day at the office, I returned home to find a bag of fruits and vegetables on the wall next to my garage. There was no note but I knew exactly who had left it. From time to time, this temple member generously shares the boun- ty from his farm. He never stops to chat but quietly drives by and leaves a bag for me. I never manage to catch him but have seen him drive away a few times. I am always grateful for his gen-
On this occasion, his sim- ple gift brought a big smile to my face as the tension of the day melted away. I also felt a little ashamed of being so consumed by my dark- ness. My heart was opened by his kindness and my eyes
