  A Lights Out!
nother major downside to the pandemic lockdown is the incredible amount of electricity we use in the course of a month. While I’m working toward instal-
lation of solar panels, that solution can’t come soon enough. While things are loosening up with the increasing amount of vaccinations being given, we still find ourselves pretty
much staying at home.
Plus, I know this sounds silly but our two dogs, Buddy and
Wilson, are home all day long, so I maintain a lot of electrical appliances to ensure their comfort. Hey, they’re family!
If it’s going to be a hot day, I leave the air conditioner and ceiling fan on in the living room, and the light on in the kitchen in case we don’t get home before dark. And I leave one television on to “keep them company.”
They’re allowed to watch Animal Planet to be with all their friends, but I won’t allow them to tune in to my daughter’s shows — the Kardashians or those serial killer teen sleuth podcasts. Those dogs are anxious enough without their dad being around.
The biggest “wasters” of electricity, however, have got to be my wife and daughter. They are notorious for not turn- ing things off when they’re done using them. My wife will watch television in the bedroom with all the lights on and before long, she and our daughter will be in the living room watching Grace and Frankie. Ergo, no one is in the bedroom and everything is still on in there! That’s the trigger for me to tour the house and turn everything off that’s not being used. They are oblivious to my tirade, which only makes me crazier.
This past Christmas, our daughter received a laser printer from my brother. We set it up above our home computer sta- tion, which happens to be at the foot of our bed. My daughter uses this printer nearly every night and never turns it off.
Most evenings, I’m the last man standing, so I go through the house turning everything off. I sometimes forget to check the printer, which has a white blinking light on the front panel. It’s not until I jump into bed that the blinking light acts as a beacon and prevents me from any kind of sleep! I now have to throw off the blankets and get out of my comfortable bed.
The other night, I was exasperated as I had to turn the printer off again, but I was also agitated by the cable box time display, my wife’s iPhone/Apple Watch charger light and our cable mo- dem light. I reached in the dark for a pile of folded laundry and draped whatever I could grab to cover these lights.
The next morning, our daughter came into our room and exclaimed, “Oh, gross! Why are Mom’s panties all over the room?”
