Another Super Miniseries

A few weeks ago, when I picked up my older daughter from school, she started talking about The Falcon and the Winter Sol- dier. She thought it was good. I told her that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch it. She pointed out that I’d seen every other Avengers-related movie and series, so why not? One guy with a metal arm and the other guy with metal wings, that’s why. I like my superhe- roes powerful and have little interest in window-dressing weaklings. Of course, I ended
up watching it.
mean, it’s pretty good. I like the idea of Sam Wilson not re- ally knowing why he resists becoming the next Captain America. It’s not just be- cause it’s big shoes (or a big shield) to fill. A part of it is, despite the fact that he’s a vet, he’s a black man in America. And what does it say about the country if anyone — white, black or shades in between — thinks non-white would look strange costumed in stars and stripes? I like that it takes Bucky Barnes a while to understand this. As a view- er, it took me a while to truly
understand as well.

It’s headed for the Smithsonian. Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) is busy right- ing the wrongs he’s unwitting- ly committed in the past.

With decades of source material and unquestionable profitability, I don’t see it going anywhere, especially now that Disney learned to “super”-impose he- roes onto tried and true genres (sitcom, cop buddy, teen dra- ma, action-comedy). So, keep it coming, Marvel Universe. Apparently, I can’t help but watch. And if I stop, my daugh- ter will call me on it anyway.

see more of this in the previ- ous Avengers stories when he served as a metal-armed, brain- washed plot device more than anything else. But I’ m glad we’re seeing it now. I think he has the kind of juice to propel him to leading man status.

Now, my first takeaway from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is that if I were offered super-serum, I would take it in a second. (Falcon, you fool!) Captain Ameri-
ca strength and speed? You wouldn’t need to ask me twice. I don’t care about the psycho- logical effects. I’m half cuckoo already anyway.
