AThe Buddy System
s the dad of our two dogs, Buddy and Wilson, I am always concerned with their well-being. Recently, Buddy has been our focus, as he has some serious
health concerns we are addressing. The other month, I men- tioned we are treating him for diabetes with daily insulin shots. While that has gotten his condition under control, it did insti- gate problems with his vision, namely cataracts and glaucoma. After numerous visits with his veterinarian and an eye spe- cialist, we discovered that he now has limited vision. We’ve known this, as he’s been bumping into things and is hesitant to go walking on a leash since he can’t see where he’s going.
I consulted with his eye specialist, who gave us options with regard to treatment and possible eye surgery. Buddy took care of my mom when she was alive, and we will do whatever it takes to take care of him no matter what it costs. While we
determine which route to go, we are aggressively treating him with eye medications and figuring out ways to accommodate his new lifestyle. Ever since we had him and in spite of the insistence of my wife and daughter, I swore that we would never buy one of those dog strollers. In my mind, that was the gateway to dog outfits and hats, and while I’m probably in the minority, I hate that. Well, I bought him a stroller and he couldn’t be
                                                                   happier on “walks.”
As for his eyedrops, I had to register him at our pharma-
cy. I use both Longs, which is closer to where I work, and Safeway, which is closer to where I live. In Buddy’s case, I went with Safeway. Believe it or not, animals have their own prescription account. I downloaded the Safeway pharmacy app and registered myself as the primary user, but when I keyed in Buddy’s information, it asked me for his birth date. I put in April 26, 2011, but was rejected as his birthday reflects he was under age for use of the app. Fine, I would go to the pharmacy in person.
Since he can’t fall under my HMSA medical plan, the cost for his drugs was going to be expensive. I downloaded the GoodRx app for possible coupons. I then went to Safeway to pick up his eyedrops. The pharmacy people couldn’t be nicer, but when I tried to use my GoodRx gold card it didn’t cover it because Buddy needed to have his own GoodRx account. Another Catch-22! At this point I joked with the pharmacist: “I don’t get it. Buddy just voted in the last election.”
