 A Dead Weight
fter 15 months of absolutely no exercise or working out and a weight gain of about 30 pounds, I decided that it was time to take back my life. I have a million
excuses for not resuming my Bootcamp regimen — the two main ones being that I can’t tolerate working out with a mask on and I refuse to exercise on video.
Sorry coaches, but it’s the truth. I have been on an uninten- tional carb-loading diet, which explains how I’ve obtained the official “dad bod.” It’s all of my own doing, but I didn’t know how to kick-start the path back to better condition.
Then, I received a text from my buddy and former weight trainer, Brian Conant. That’s right, “Conan” with a “t.” He wanted to fire up our weight training sessions once again.
Brian is the husband of one of my Bootcamp friends, Myra. I later found out Brian was my wife’s classmate in parochial elementary school. When I first heard that, all I said was, “Brian, please tell me she wasn’t your

together, he was waiting for me with a huge grin.
I knew immediately that I would be completely destroyed. Of course, Brian, who is the same age as me, is a great trainer, and his priority is to make sure neither of us gets injured. “Let
 girlfriend!” She wasn’t, thank God,
and she later told me they were friends and that back then Brian was a kind of a scrawny kid. Anyhow, this was the sign that I needed to get my okole in gear. I knew it was going to be brutal, but I agreed to resume my workouts with him. On the first day, I walked into his “legit” home gym, and although he wasn’t rubbing his palms
              the games begin!” he bellowed.
Two hours later, I left barely alive. We were working arms
that day and since I drive a manual stick shift, I had trouble even lifting my arm to put the car in gear. As I trudged into our kitchen when I got home, I tried to make a protein shake.
The problem was I couldn’t lift my arms high enough to reach my shaker cup on the shelf. I called my wife for help and after assessing my condition, she chuckled and said, “Wow, you really must have had a tough workout.”
I simply nodded and grunted. I just didn’t have the desire to tell her that my entire workout that day consisted of me just loading the weight plates on the bar for Brian.
