things are flowing, we feel connected and it’s easy to feel grateful. When they aren’t, we focus on what’s wrong, get frustrated and disconnect from the flow.
To increase gratitude, it helps to intentionally use big-picture thinking by looking for connection. For example, writers block is frustrating. When I feel it, if I begin thinking about everyone involved in making the keyboard that I’m using, the mouse I’m touching, and the monitor I’m looking at, and think of all the frustration that they must have faced in making these things, I begin to feel connection. Before I know it, my words are flowing, and I am grateful.

I learned that addictive brains don’t listen to reason, that they come from all so- cioeconomic backgrounds and that they are part of the full range of human expres- sion. I stopped judging my- self and judging him. As I coped better with my son’s homelessness, I was able to help others with a lighter heart, and, as my English grandmother learned during the Blitz, to carry on with my life.

I remind myself that he is funny and kind, and so spa- tially gifted that once he or- ganized my refrigerator and pantry so well that it hasn’t looked that good since.
Until recently, I’ve re- frained from talking pub- licly about my now-adult son. For years, I partitioned my energy between my pro- fessional life and working to help my son fix his life. Eventually, I realized that he wasn’t the one to fix; it was me. I had honest conversa- tions with myself. I knew

I am deeply grateful to my 16-year sober husband, Bill Sage, and to those in our community who under- stand, care and try to help. I know that my son may or may not choose to make his life healthy, and that regard-
