Delta Kappa Gamma Society Internation- al’s mission is to promote the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. It carries out this mission through its 61,000 members in 17 countries. One of the ways that Hawai‘i State Xi Chapter, which was founded on Kaua‘i in 1986, does this is through its annu- al scholarship. Xi awards a $1,000 scholarship to a grad- uating high school senior from Kaua‘i who is interested in pursuing a teaching career, or a student already enrolled in an accredited teaching pro- gram on the island.

Prior to the pandemic, Xi participated in the Kaua‘i United Way walkathon as a way to fund its scholarship, and members look forward to the time when this event returns. Xi does volunteer work with the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Kids Fest, the STEPS Parent-Child Fair, donates books to local doctor and den- tist waiting rooms, and orga- nizes activities that promote literacy and education. In 2021 DKG Xi Chapter awarded its scholarship to Kelvin Ibia, a 2021 graduate of Kapa‘a High School who is in his second semester at Kaua‘i Community College. Kelvin is very focused on his goal of becoming a teacher of students who, like himself, immigrated to the United States. He is multilingual and will soon be starting a job at the college as a mentor to new students from other countries.

Ten years ago, Amber Fu- jimoto, a second-grade teach- er at Kalāheo High School, received Xi’s scholarship. She earned her teaching de- gree at Chaminade Univer-
sity and taught at Kapolei Elementary School for five years before coming back to Kaua‘i to teach at the elemen- tary school she attended. Am- ber says what she loves most about teaching is the relation- ships she develops with her students. She loves getting to know each and every student, identifying how to best sup- port them, and watching their confidence grow.
Every year, DKG Xi is honored to support prospec- tive teachers like Kelvin and
