OWilcox Commemorates New ED

renovation and update is the first for the department since it opened in 1995.
ing essential emergency and trauma care to our patients and community.
This renovation comes at a crucial time. The Wilcox ED averages 25,000 emergency visits and 450 trauma acti- vations every year. We treat all manner of injuries and ill- nesses — from medical condi- tions, such as a heart attack or difficulty breathing, to trauma injuries that can occur from a car crash or fall. Sadly, trauma cases often involve more than one person, which means mul- tiple patients could need care at the same time.
Nurses prepare one of the Wilcox ED’s two updated trauma resuscitation suites for a patient’s arrival. PHOTOS COURTESY WILCOX MEDICAL CENTER
Wilcox is a not-for-profit medical center and the larg- est medical center on Kaua‘i. We’re extremely thankful for our community members for their generous financial dona- tions and for their continued support in making these up- grades to our emergency de- partment possible.
Among the new features are two expanded trauma resusci- tation suites able to accommo- date more trauma team mem- bers and essential supplies.
Wilcox is Kaua‘i’s only Lev- el III Trauma Center and was actually the first in Hawai‘i to be verified by the American College of Surgeons — so these two renovated trauma suites will enhance the efficien- cy of lifesaving care on Kaua‘i.
The new ED also features three rooms that can be de- pressurized. This helps pre- vent air from flowing out into other areas and aids in keep- ing airborne diseases, like COVID-19, contained.
patients at any time without the need to enter the room. And, all patient care areas are now completely private.
