Kauai Marathon is partnering with National Tropical Botanical Garden to present the inaugural Roots ‘n Shoots Fun Run and Walk this weekend. On Saturday (April 4), NTBG will host the 5K fundraiser at Allerton and McBryde gardens. Participants in this one-ofa-kind event will check in at NTBG Southshore Visitors Center parking lot beginning at 6 a.m., and will be shuttled to the starting point at the beginning of the nonprofit’s Biodiversity Trail. Easter is Sunday (April 5), and I believe it’s a cause for celebration, no matter what your faith may be. Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas presents its second annual Easter EGGstravaganza, a day of fun-filled activities for the entire family. Mental Health America of Hawaii‘s 10th annual Mental Health Awards Luncheon is slated for May 12 and will honor leaders in the state who have dedicated their services to improving the lives of those afflicted with mental illness. One of the honorees, Kathy Sheffield, will be recognized as an “Outstanding Family Advocate.” She leads National Alliance on Mental Illness Kauai chapter, which helps families with loved ones who suffer from mental illness …

More congrats go to Leila Nelson from Kapaa Middle School, winner of the District Spelling Bee, who represented Kauai at this year’s Hawaii State Spelling Bee held on Oahu last month. It takes tremendous courage to perform under pressure like that and I commend her for her ability to accomplish such a brave act …
